Mathias Forge (Trombone), Phil Julian (Electronics), David Papapostolou (Cello)

Two improvised sessions recorded in London during March 2009.

Review by Michael Rosenstein for Paris Transatlantic here

Review by Ken Waxman for Jazz Word here

"This trio of trombone, electronics and cello perform two tracks; the first, "Long Nylon Oak," was recorded in the church of St. James the Great, Friern Barnet, without an audience and the second, "Floodlit Iron Tracery," in concert
two days earlier in a different church, St. Mark's, Clerkenwell. Given the gap and the different contexts, there is a remarkable sense of continuity between the pieces, particularly commendable as the three had not played together before.
Both pieces are restrained and evolve slowly. Most notably, Mathias Forge confines his contributions on trombone to subtle breathy blowing rather than full blown notes, giving them a texture that meshes (a fitting title) well with the electronics and cello... Simon Reynell's recording perfectly captures every
nuance of the music, a vital ingredient of their success."

John Eyles, "All About Jazz", October 2009

"...Forge's burping trombone, Papapostolou's percussive cello and Julian's electronics stutter onwards in a procession of knocks and rattles that ricochet against the resonant acoustic.  While, in another context, those same gestures might imply velocity and speed, these acoustic realities divert the music towards a more meandering, leisurely paced structure that is intriguingly at odds with its material."

Philip Clark, "The Wire", November 2009

Entr'acte <http://www.entracte.co.uk>

These recordings were made as part of a proposed file-sharing collaboration
with Austrian sound artist Helmut Schäfer.  The recordings were abandoned
after Schäfer’s death in April 2007 but largely due to his original interest and enthusiasm, newly-recorded sections were added, with the final edits and
mix completed later that year. Schäfer does not appear on these recordings,
but the final tracks have been completed with the initial discussions for the collaboration very much in mind.

Improvised and recorded in early 2007 in London by Philip Julian
(G3 PowerBook/software). Beautifully mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service.

"...what we have are 8 beautifully constructed tracks of abstract sound. They have poise poetry and deliberation - others take note. I need not say much more - than they utilize with what I think is both wit and skill the audio media of the sound artist. Not noise then as much as abstract musical compositions."

Ratskin Records <http://www.ratskin.org/order.html>

Description from Ratskin Records Site:

V/A: (TRISKAIDEKAPHOBIA) 13,000.00 MilliSeconds is a compilation featuring over 215 artists + musicians who composed thirteen second compositions especially for this release. This collection documents artists working all over the world, with these pieces having a reference to the " contemporary time famine" brought on by the technological complex of which none of us can escape from. These aural documents of justified schizophrenia fight fire with fire, and pry away at our rotting attention span.

Includes tracks by:

Recycled Music

January 2008

RRRecords
<http://www.rrrecords.com/>

"RRRecords is extremely well known for their "Recycled Music" releases - recordings released on commercially available cassette tapes which have been recycled with new music, but still include the original insert or printing on the cassette. RRR Recycled tapes are labeled with a simple strip of adhesive tape along the spine of the insert with the artist's name hand-written upon it. Part of the charm of the recycled releases is that each tape is unique, and that, in some cases, the original audio is still partly audible. RRRecords has released numerous recycled tapes by internationally known artists as well as small artists who had never released anything previously. The extremely low cost of reproducing the recordings onto cassettes, cheaply available at any record store, most likely accounts for this range of releases." Transit

September 2007

The Locus Of <http://www.myspace.com/thelocusof>

3" CDR Strictly limited to 100 copies in full colour sleeve and label with insert.

"A luxurious minimalist piece using organ and electronics."

“...Transit” is a remarkable realization indeed, a perfect example of “minimum of means, maximum result”... A gently sober undulation, generated by the adjacent waves and shifting harmonics of the sources, keeps us snug and warm for the whole duration of the track. It morphs just a tad in terms of reverberating hues, and resonates luxuriously throughout. Instantly we feel at home in Cheapmachines’ entrancing world, needing only a few minutes to decide that the “repeat” function is required... I must confess that I’d have appreciated a full-length CD of this particular drone, such is the extent of my liking. Highly recommended."     Massimo Ricci, Touching Extremes (January 2008)

"Cheapmachines' version of the drone eschews the almost stereotypical mellowness that many think characterises such music and instead opts for a far more insistent and muscular variety.  The 16 (and change) minute rolling organ tone that makes up the bulk of the sound on offer here is a frontal lobe squeezing, third-eye squeegeeing, perspective contorting hallelujah of otherworldly bliss.  Far too short to be fully satisfying and exactly the right length to leave you desperately craving for more."
Ian Holloway, Wonderful Wooden Reasons (Issue 14)

Zeromoon <http://www.zeromoon.com>

New drone-based recordings made using bowed gong, cymbals and electronics. Made available as part of the excellent Zeromoon download series.

"...this recent album is an hypnotic beauty born from a studio setting.  It has that ritualistic emptiness, a power that makes you want to topple straight into black waters, a canvas that your mind expands to, participates with. The mist strewn fields, bodiless cows floating above viscous grey blankets of chiffon and the scarred sky - a track marked schism birthing the cold autumnal sun, all help encapsulate the sonic unfurlings here … an unhurried majesty of shifting electrons."

Cloudboy, Rottenmeats - October 2007

Lowlands

April 2007

Authorised Version <http://www.a-version.co.uk>

New, full length album release in a limited edition of 100 copies.

Sam Davies, The Wire, Outer Limits - November 2007

"...'Lowlands' is a work that was recorded in 2004 and remastered by Bernard Günter for current release. 'Tracks were mainly recorded specifically for radio broadcast using short and longwave radio transmissions as the original sound source'. In the past years we have learned (and loved) as a noise band, but whose best works were outside of the sure confinement of noise. The drones of 'Fugue Cycle' or some of the earlier musique concrete works. In 'Fugue Cycle' shows us something of the current Cheapmachines sound, then perhaps 'Lowlands' should be seen as a work of change. Noise is not entirely gone, but drones have not arrived fully either. None of the long or shortwave sounds are there to be recognized as such, as everything is mangled inside the computer. Sometimes the usual loudness but, and more interesting, also with a forecast of some more quiet moments. It's here that I think Cheapmachines is really good, carefully constructing music out of hiss and static crackles. Obviously not far away from the microsound crowd, but with a strong voice of his own. Nice one, glad to see it released." Frans De Ward, Vital Weekly

Fugue Cycle is a collection of three extended drone works made using layered recordings of electronic and wind-powered organs, guitar and field recordings.

http://www.con-v.org/cnvr13.html

"...drones of impressing emotional strength... a well produced example of minimal drones, which have organic qualities, induce visual phantasies and are contemplative without being boring. An ideal mixture for a mental journey.Sascha Renner, EARlabs

"...Shimmering tones that makes small, but ever changing waves... Think Phil Niblock but quieter, or Paul Panhuysen's 'Magic Square of 5', Alvin Lucier's 'Music On A Long Thin Wire', but not as low bass like, and combine this, and get 'Fugue Cycle'. A damn fine release. His best, no doubt." Frans De Ward, Vital Weekly

ZANOISE & RAMISWAMI @ 40, a compilation tribute to Zan Hoffman.

For over 20 years Zan Hoffman has been active as an audio saboteur par excellence.  He has amassed recordings by hundreds of artists, recontextualised them in a myriad of combinations and released the results on his ZIDSIC label (over 800 releases strong). On the occasion of his 40th birthday, some like-minded noisists have decided to return the favour by plundering the ZIDSIC catalog itself.
Featuring contributions from BC, BIG CITY ORCHESTRA, CHEAPMACHINES, DAVE FUGLEWICZ, SKOWEYAJEED & RINUS VAN ALEBEEK, this is a limited edition of 40 CDRs with hand-painted aluminium plates available by mail order ONLY for $8 (US post-paid) or $9 (elsewhere) by cheque, money order or international money order to:

Uranium City Records

October 2003

Uranium City's first intercontinental release - "a shuddering, dense, loud and beautiful piece of noise... Imagine a cartoonishly giant, rusty drill press in some abandoned factory spinning through an eight foot slab of wrought iron. This single 57:44 track is the sound of that drill press, magnified."

"Chihuahua! Pulverising noise-a-delica that might well stove your ears back into your skull from these mysterious UK (?) treble-smashers. Furious, lo-fi, hellsound set for destruct. If we lived in a fair world, this would come packaged with a glass of water for your ears. Great!" Campbell Kneale (Celebrate PSI Phenomenon)

Album Length CDR - All sounds derived from broken, reassembled and prepared vinyl, cracked compact discs and cut-up promotional flexidiscs.

"... the evil side of modern turntablism... ironically amusing and elegantly fastidious with lots of its hysterics sedated by funny loops, crunching skinning of vinyl and flexi discs, instant hiccups by cheap drum machines and esoteric-to-industrial cauldrons. It's a spiky course, requiring Doc Martens for your brain to be fully captured, but there is some serious substance at the end of the road. " Massimo Ricci (Touching Extremes)

Four track EP available on C90 cassette and CDR from this legendary Japanese label.  Harsh noise and long duration, multi-layered drone tracks throughout.

"Like a blindfolded wrecking crew swinging wildly with sledgehammers, hitting everything, hitting nothing, getting badly bruised by numerous misplaced swipes. Cheap Machines destroy everything in their path, but still miss enough bits so that it still looks interesting when they are finished, rather than leveling everything cleanly. The best kinda garage noise... harsh and lo-fi." Campbell Kneale (Celebrate PSI Phenomenon)

"Rhythmic noise electronics with the expected attack of frequencies and harsh sounds... Track no 4 (Red Halo) though, swirls around you like an insistent dream or a hard-to-get rid-of obsession and leaves you with a sense of redemption, or maybe something else, an eventful aural experience anyway. Nice." (1000+1 TILT e-zine)
